Premise
A village is trapped in an echo of time. A wicked mage placed a powerful manuscript in the Cavern of Echos. Only returning it to the village square can free them. The PC is offered all their gold, magic items, and a boon from the scroll itself.
Drinking a provided potion grants entry but transforms the PC into a random character for 5 days.
Structure
- Three-day journey to the cavern
- Bandits have moved in en route
- Wizard forgot to mention the wards
Key Encounters
Puzzle Door
Strange symbols pulse in diminishing triplets. Touching the door kills the light. Opens when a word or intentional sound is spoken three times — like an echo.
- Perception: owl hoots three times, frog croaks, bird chirps, howl — all in threes
- INT check reveals the pattern or a riddle
- Nearby scouting surfaces more triple sounds
- A Druid encountered en route will say “ah, the cavern of echos, echos, echos…”
Contraption Entrance
An artificer’s light-reflecting machine fills the room — gears, blades, mirrors, iron balls. Not a trap but holding something back. Runes in Gnome shorthand cover the walls.
- DEX check allows passage or disarmament
- Failure: machine shakes, explodes in D4 turns or summons Echos of past beasts
- Destroying it: 1D6 + 2 echos
Druid Echo
A Druid bound to the cavern, friendly, easily distracted.
- Talking reveals the guardian; offers no hints, keeps saying they’ll be fine
- Hold attention for two rounds: summons two medium creatures to guide and protect
- In three rounds she wanders off and fades
- Attacks cause her to disappear
Manuscript
Once the characters have it no monsters will bother the group.
Resolution
All villagers fade into being. Trapped for 6 years but take it in stride. Only 50gp available (they’re a small village). Reward: two scrolls and an enchanted cloak — keeps out wind, once per day casts Mirror Image (echos of the wearer).
Twist Hooks
- Was it stolen? Every generation the manuscript returns to the cavern and villagers make a pilgrimage — but this year a curse trapped everyone from leaving.
- Who set the curse, and why?
